News Alert!  Alicia Gonzalez wins the Houston Academics Spring 2008 Academic Merit Scholarship!!!

Dec. 2007 - The Houston Academics, Inc. National Merit Scholarship is a scholarship designed to recognize and reward excellence in high school academics.  There will be one award (1) of $500.00, non-renewable to a United States high school junior or senior who has the intention of attending college in the U.S.  In order to be eligible to apply, high school students must have a minimum g.p.a. of 3.0 and sign up for the Houston Academics, Inc. Newsletter.  To apply for this scholarship, simply do the following by the stated application deadline - January 18, 2008:

1.  Submit a written copy by email of the student's high school transcript indicating minimum g.p.a standards.
2.  Sign up to receive the Houston Academics, Inc. Newsletter by clicking here; NEWSLETTER
3.  Submit an internet ready - youtube style video of 5 mins. or less which explains in the student's own words why he or she is the most deserving of the Houston Academics, Inc. National Merit Scholarship.  The video must demonstrate the student's value of education while acknowledging how a college education will further this value.  The strength of the high school transcript, the overall creativity of the video and the total number of votes received (ratings) will determine the eventual winner of this academic scholarship.  Winners will be announced in March 2008.  Video submissions and all application materials become property of Houston Academics, Inc.  Submissions should be made by email to

Yui Hing Trina Tam
Bear Creek High School, Stockton, CA

Ranked within the top 5% of her high school graduating class, Trina Tam has excelled in all academic areas.  Winner of the State of California Assembly Scholastic Achievement Award and the recipient of the Lodi Unified School District Certificate of Recognition, Trina has earned a 4.3 GPA and serves as Treasurer and Secretary of her high school's National Honor Society.  
 

Tyler Fix (Senior)
Deer Valley High School, Glendale, Arizona

President of the Deer Valley High School National Honor Society, Valedictorian for the class of 2008, and named among "Who's Who Among American High School Students," Tyler has also excelled in sports in being named All-Region Academic Teams for swimming and Tennis (2007).  Tyler is also an Advanced Placement Scholar in Language Arts, History and Calculus AB.

Jasmine Churchill (Senior)
Owings Mills High School, Owings Mills, MD

With a 3.83 GPA in an academically rich and challenging honors-level curriculum and a member of her high school's honor roll since her freshman year, Jasmine Churchill also received an honorable mention by the State of Maryland as a Maryland Distinguished Scholar.  This summer 2007, Jasmine Churchill attended the Johns Hopkins Pre-College Summer Program with an emphasis in the sciences (biochemistry). 

Travis Lee Hornsby (Senior)
Pensacola High School, Pensacola, FL

As the Valedictorian (class of 2008) of his high school's Senior International Baccalaureate Class, Travis has positioned himself as a leader in academic achievement (straight A's in all classes in high school) as well as demonstrating an avid interest in European History (scored 5 of the AP exam in World History and Modern European History.  Travis also placed 1st in the regional Physics Jeopardy competition.

Martia Hunt (Senior)
Messmer High School, Milwaukee, WI

Ranked #1 in her graduating class with a 4. 063 GPA, Martia proves that hard work and dedication are the keys to success.  As a member of the National Honor Society, and the honor roll, Martia also finds time to volunteer for several local organizations.  Martia's academic achievement in her honors-level curriculum at Messmer High School in a variety of scholastic areas including Pre-Calculus, History and English reflects her leadership and dedication to her community, her family and personal excellence.

African American Future Achievers Scholarship Program

Annual awards for graduating high school seniors who have at least one parent of African American heritage. Students must live within the boundaries of a participating Ronald McDonald House Charity Chapter. Selection is based on academic achievement, financial need, and community involvement, and personal qualities.  An essay must be included with application packet. See website for a list of participating areas.

A Gift from the Heart Scholarship

Annual awards for minority graduating seniors from T.C. Williams High School (VA) who are from a single parent household and will be enrolling in full-time postsecondary studies. Selection based on academic achievement (minimum 2.0 GPA), financial need, participation in school and community activities, leadership abilities, and work experience.  Number of awards may vary.  Nonrenewable; but recipients are encouraged to reapply and compete annually.

Minority Educator Recruitment & Retention Scholarship

Annual awards for minority residents of Kentucky who are full-time undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in the Teaching field. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA. Recipients who do not fulfill requirements must repay award with interest.  Due date and number of awards may vary.  Contact the MERR scholarship coordinator at any state supported university or the Kentucky Department of Education for more information and/or application.
